Easter 2020
Easter
is a Christian festival which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The
holiday falls on April 12 this year. It is celebrated all across the globe with
joy. Easter is celebrated in France, America, Germany, Bermuda, Spain, Chios,
Ethiopia, Italy, New York etc. Most Christians refer to the week before Easter
as "Holy Week".
It is
known as La Pâques in French, Pascha in Latin, Paskha in Greek, Paaske in
Danish, Pasen in Dutch and Paskah in Indonesian. By tradition, people treat
chocolate eggs and bunnies to little children and gifts are given to little
children and are supposed to be from the Easter Bunny. Many Easter egg hunts
are organised in family gatherings and children have to find plastic eggs
around the house with presents inside them.
On
Easter, many people go to church in their formal clothes and prayer and do
service there. There are also festive family meals organised and many family
gatherings happen. In countries where Christianity is a state religion, or
where the country has a large Christian population, Easter is often a public
holiday. As Easter is always a Sunday, many countries in the world also have
Easter Monday as a public holiday. Good Friday, which occurs two days before
Easter Sunday, is also a public holiday in many countries.
In
Germany, trees are decorated with decorated easter eggs called Easter Egg
Trees. It’s also a custom in Austria, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, Moravia and the
Czech Republic. On Good Friday, the skies of Bermuda are filled with different
colours because of the Bermuda Kite Festival. It is said that the kites are a
celebration of the ascent of Christ. Bermudians also eat fish cakes when it’s
Easter. In Verges, local people celebrate Easter by having Holy Festival Week
or Semana Santa. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church celebrates Easter or Fasika one
or two weeks after churches in the West and it is considered to be more
important than Christmas. Families eat spicy chicken stew, flat bread and honey
wine. In Italy, spectacular firework displays are organised. In New York, the
Easter Parade begins with the decoration of sanctuaries in churches with Easter
flowers.
